f you are on transit in Kota Bharu, the best place to visit to enjoy the real life of local people is by visiting Pasar Siti Khadijah. Pasarmeans market, and Siti Khadijah is the name of the prophet, Muhammad. She is a successful trader when marrying our prophet. That’s the reason why Kelantan government named this market as Pasar Siti Khadijah because most of the sellers there are women.
This market is located right in the city center, about 15 minutes from the airport. You can get there by taking a taxi from the Sultan Mohd IV Airport in Pengkalan Chepa. The cost for a cab is RM 30 (USD10). If you are from Perhentian Island by bus, the bus will stop at the main bus terminal (inter-city terminal) at the city. Pasar Siti Khadijah is located in just two block from the bus terminal.
This is among the oldest market in town and almost all transactions are done by cash. Even though this place is famous among travelers, they won’t accept dollars or other currency. The sellers usually old ladies and some men (not many men selling there).
You can get almost anything from this market.
The ground floor is where you can find fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and seafoods.
The second floor (opposite McDonald’s) is where you can get local delicacies like Laksam, Laksa, Nasi Berlauk with fish curry, Gearbox Soup, and many others.
The third floor is great for souvenirs. You can get local clothes such as batik, praying clothes, and also craft. I do personally recommend you to spend more time at the third floor. You definitely can get high quality clothes, exclusively handmade design right there. Don’t hesitate to bargain too, even I as a local people do ask for some discount. Why not you? If the price stated as RM 100, don’t hesitate to ask for RM 80 or RM 70. They already mark up the price for you to bargain.
This market open as from 7.30 am (great time for breakfast) and close at late evening, around 6.30 pm.
